I get the feeling that when people find out that I’m a dietitian they suddenly have to hide what they’re eating or tell me about all the healthy and nutritious foods they eat. I think this is a normal response – it’s like when you meet a dentist and say, “I floss everyday!”
What many people don’t know about me and don’t understand about many dietitians is that, although we do care very much about what kinds of foods we put into our body, many times we are more concerned with whether or not we are enjoying our food, and savoring our food. Are we eating for the right reason – hunger – or are we eating out of boredom, emotions, stress? The idea that eating for hunger only and savoring all foods – not just “healthy” foods – and being able to eat anything you want without over eating is called Intuitive Eating. Here’s a little New Year’s Resolution Recipe for Eating that I’m passing along to everyone. This year instead of making a resolution to eat healthier or exercise more (although great resolutions) make a vow to eat intuitively.
