A parent’s love may be blind, but don’t let it stand in the way of your child’s health. No parent wants to hear that their chid is overweight and is at risk for conditions like hypertension, high cholesterol, heart disease and diabetes. Those things are very scary and a parent’s guilt will always rear it’s ugly head when those words are spoken. But if your child’s pediatrician tells you that your child’s health is at risk due to excessive weight, it’s time to set that guilt aside and do what’s right. Your doctor has probably given you recommendations for weight management based on your child’s growth chart. If you child was previously following a typical growth curve, but has been steadily trending higher and higher on his or her growth chart your pediatrician will alert you to the trend and probably suggest some lifestyle modifications. Listen to your pediatrician, take their advice, and ask her about a referral to a pediatric dietitian in your area.
